“The girls love to come in, locate their card hanging on the wall, and scan into the building because the parrot on the screen welcomes them by name.”
Girls Inc. inspires all girls to be strong, smart and bold. Their comprehensive approach to whole girl development equips girls to navigate gender, economic and social barriers and grow up healthy, educated and independent. These positive outcomes are achieved through three core elements: people – trained staff and volunteers who build lasting, mentoring relationships; environment – girls-only, physically and emotionally safe, where there is a sisterhood of support, high expectations, and mutual respect; and programming – research-based, hands-on and minds on, age-appropriate, meeting the needs of today’s girls.
The organization traces its roots back to New England and the Industrial Revolution of the mid-19th Century, as a response to the needs of a new working class: young women who had migrated from rural communities in search of newly available job opportunities in textile mills and factories. Today, Girls Inc. continues this tradition with programs that address math and science education, pregnancy and drug abuse prevention, media literacy, economic literacy, adolescent health, violence prevention and sports participation.
Girls Inc. of Washington County, Maryland prides itself in offering the only after-school program in the county designed to meet the unique needs of girls ages 6 to 18. Hands-on, research-based programs provide girls with the skills and knowledge to set goals, overcome obstacles and improve academic performance. Based in Hagerstown, Girls Inc. of Washington County serves 85 to 100 girls per day from 9 different schools.
